Stuart Mortimer Hollowing Gouges

The British Turner Stuart Mortimer has developed a set of 1/2" detail spindle gouges which, because of their short flute lengths and convex grind, are uniquely suited to hollowing the end grain of vessels and boxes.

The grind on the tools must be modified slightly from that provided by Hamlet Craft (a division of Henry Taylor) to exactly match Stuart's grind: You will need to soften the heel of the bevel (round it) and make the bevel convex instead of hollow-ground. However, a little effort will be rewarded with a remarkably efficient tool.

Available with flute lengths of 2-1/2" (for working far off the rest), 3-1/2" (for intermediate work), and 4-1/2" ( general hollowing, especially when close to the rest). The shorter flutes have greater rigidity, and thus less chatter when further off the rest.
