Standard,
Radius, and Oval Skews
Skew chisels can be among the most difficult turning tools to master, but give the best final surface. For best results we recommend a radius grind as popularized by Richard Raffan. Hold the tool perpendicular to the work and place the bevel on the wood, short point leading. Rotate the tool onto its edge slightly until you get a cut, then advance the skew through the cut. Standard skews have a rectangular cross section, round-edge skews have curved edges, and oval skews have a flat on the edge with the long point.
