The Stabilizer Hollowing System By Lyle Jamieson
O
ne problem with hollow turning, even
with the best systems on the market, has been the ergonomics of getting
the hollowing tool into the vessel. This meant that the turner needed to
bend over the lathe or ride the lathe bed during hollowing. Neither of these
solutions was particularly attractive to me since I have a bit of a bad
back and my OneWay lathe bed is ~4 inches higher than my crotch. I even
considered having a saddle made for the lathe (after all, I do live in Texas!).
Even overcoming the ergonomic problem, one still needs to deal with the
aggressive, scraping action of the cutter and proper tool placement to avoid
catches.
All of these hassles are overcome with the Jamieson Stabilizer Handle. It
uses a secondary rest behind the main tool rest to guide the cutter and
simplify hollowing. You stand erect beside the lathe and gently but confidently
guide the cutter into the vessel. No more sore backs, no more nasty catches,
no more white knuckles when hollowing-even in deep, thin-walled vessels!
The Stabilizer Handle is made of 3/4" cold-rolled steel (shown
on the left, above) with a socket that accepts 3/4" hollowing tools.
If you already own the Stewart or Sorby hollowing systems the straight Omni-Tool
and Hooker Tools fit right into the Stabilizer handle. If you are new to
hollow forms, get the complete Jamieson System that includes the dual-purpose
boring bar, cutter holder, swivel tip and 3/16" HSS cutter. Instructions

The newest advancement in calipers for hollow turners is the laser!
In the past you had to struggle to know where you were in a hollow vessel
and what the wall thickness was, particularly past where your fingers or
bowl calipers could reach. This has all changed with the LASER
CALIPER, which allows precise location of the cutter tip at all times
and easily helps you set incredibly thin walls. Go to the link

The Laser Caliper simply bolts onto your Jamieson handle. It is easily
adjusted and is extreamly stable in use. The Laser Caliper can also be used
with other hollowers such as the Stewart or Kelton tools fitted into your
