BOWL GOUGES

Superfluted gouges (left) have a V-shaped
gullet, while Deep-Fluted bowl gouges have
a U-shaped gullet. English bowl gouges are
sized by the width of the gullet, not the width
of the bar.

NOTE: Bowl gouges are sized by two differnt systems. The English system uses the width of the flute while the American system uses the diamter of the bar. Thus, a 3/8" bowl gouge in the English system is a 1/2" gouge in the US system. In order to reduce confusion we now use the AMERICAN system.

Deep Fluted & Super Fluted Bowl Gouges

A bowl gouge is the best way to shape the outside of a vessel and remove material from the inside. The side grind is favored for bowl gouges today, although each turner may have one or more preferred grinds for particular jobs.
